Because now the covers of sideloaded epubs or azw3 won't show up. The problem is that sideloaded ebooks, or as they call "documents", aren't necessarily pirated ebooks. What they are doing, in fact, is just to close even more the doors to piracy, or just to cheat on clients to force the clients to buy their ebooks at Amazon store. It's an smart strategy, since now they have arguments to say that they are not supporting mobi, since it's "outdated". Previous releases of calibre are available here. They aren't actually supporting epub format, they're allowing the "send to kindle" feature for this format, and they do this by converting epub to azw3, which is kindles's proprietary format.
